Even on the worst day of your life, you have a choice to make. Hitting rock bottom can be a great opportunity to create the life you’ve always wanted. With nothing to lose, you can explore new options you may not have previously considered. Our most difficult days can remind us how much we truly have to be grateful for if we can focus on the things that really matter. Let’s look at what we can make of the shards we land on.
Falling Apart to Fall Back Together
Life can be challenging when you’re feeling pressure from so many different directions. Maybe you’re not the same person you used to be, but you can’t seem to dig yourself out of the rut you’ve fallen into.
Hitting rock bottom can feel like the end of the world, like there’s nowhere left to go, but it could also be an excellent place to start anew. Many times, when life is falling apart, it can be an opportunity to piece yourself and your life back together into something completely different.
When my own life came apart, I allowed myself to wallow, but only for a short while — because I knew I had to get back up and keep walking on, somehow.
Momentous change can be really scary, but I knew that my own struggle was as good a time as any to start getting curious. What would I do if I could start over? Things couldn’t get worse than this — so what did I have to lose?
I didn’t stop there, though. Everywhere else in my life, I liberated myself from my own expectations by allowing myself to become curious about new possibilities. I knew my situation could only get better once I hit the bottom of the mess. With this mindset, the future became exciting to think about.
Building Strength Through Struggle
To keep my head in the right place, I also used past difficult experiences to remind myself of what I’ve already been through. During that challenging phase, I found solace by reflecting on how I got there. I considered the lessons I was learning from the experience, understanding that I’ve been through similar situations before. I was resilient then, and I could be resilient again. Hitting rock bottom taught me a valuable lesson about what made me unhappy, but also about what makes me strong.
Happiness Is in the Little Things
Last but not least, the darkness I overcame really helped me appreciate the things I once took for granted. I woke in the morning grateful for the sun on my face, the coffee I had to drink, people who love me and the roof over my head. When I practice gratitude, it helps me remember that my worst day could be someone else’s dream life. Many of us have the bare necessities, and that’s more than some people can ask for.
When you’re looking up from the bottom, it’s okay if there are days when you can’t get out of bed. It happens to the best of us. What’s important is that we always make an effort to keep trying, no matter how often life knocks us down. Every day is a new day, and we have the opportunity to start anew anytime we want.
